Baseball Defensive Plays: Outfield Fly to Left with Runner on Third

In baseball and softball, all nine fielders have defined responsibilities and need to move on every play.

Outfield fly to left with runner on third, the play is to make the catch and throw to home.  

Outfield Fly to Left with Runner on Third

Play:

Situation: Runner on third with less than two outs
Offense: Outfield fly to left field
Defense: Play is to make the catch or field the ball and throw to home

Player Responsibilities:

Pitcher: Back up the throw to home
Catcher: Cover home
1st base: Move across the infield to cutoff throw to home
2nd base: Cover second base
3rd base: Cover third base
Shortstop: Move into outfield to cutoff throw to home
If the ball is hit to deep left field, then the shortstop will need to become the first (of two) cutoff men (double cut)
Left: Go hard to the ball to make the catch and throw to home
Center: Back up left field
Right: Back up second base
Note: The throw to the cutoff man only if necessary, otherwise throw directly to home.
