Baseball Defensive Plays: Foul Ball Popup Down First Base Line

In baseball and softball, all nine fielders have defined responsibilities and need to move on every play.

Foul ball popup down the first base line with bases empty or runners on base, the play is to make the catch and hold the runners.  

Foul Ball Down 1B Line

Play:

Situation: Bases empty or runners on base
Offense: Foul ball popup down the first base line
Defense: Play is to make the catch and hold the runners

Player Responsibilities:

Pitcher: Move toward first base line
Catcher: Cover home
1st base: Make the catch and look to see if the runners are tagging to advance to the next base
2nd base: Cover first base
3rd base: Cover third base
Shortstop: Cover second base
Left: Back up third base
Center: Back up second base
Right: Make the catch and look to see if the runners are tagging to advance to the next base
Note: If the runners do not tag on the catch then quickly get the ball back into the infield or the pitcher
